Vintage Mid-Century Walnut Wood Platform Bed by Richard Artschwager (attr.) 1950s

This rare vintage American mid-century modern full size platform bed, attributed to artist and furniture maker Richard Artschwager, is circa 1950s. Artschwager, who became an important American contemporary artist known for his work spanning Pop Art and Minimalism, began his career as a cabinetmaker and operated a furniture-making studio in New York during the 1950s. The bed’s clean geometric form and restrained design are characteristic of his furniture from this period.

Well-crafted from walnut, the minimalist design includes a low-profile platform base with a broad rectangular headboard. The walnut wood bedframe surrounds a sturdy plywood mattress platform that rests on four squared wooden legs with an additional fifth support leg beneath the center of the bed. The headboard is elevated above the platform on two black vertical wood supports. The bed completely disassembles and the legs unscrew for easier transport, storage and installation. With its clean lines and understated design, this unique vintage platform bed has timeless, distinctly contemporary appeal.
