This vintage mid-century modern rosewood writing desk was designed by Jean Gillon for Italma Wood Art and made in Brazil circa 1960. The desk features a clean, minimalist design combining richly grained rosewood with a polished chrome-plated steel frame. The rectangular desk features rosewood desktop, side panels and front modesty panel supported by four squared metal legs with exposed fasteners and a distinctive architectural construction. A three-drawer cabinet on the right side features original curved chrome drawer pulls. Original Italma Wood Art manufacturer’s label reads: “Italma Wood Art. Handmade Jacaranda Wood. Design by Jean Gillon. Made in Brazil” with handwritten numbers F2/70.

Jean Gillon
Jean Gillon (1919–2007) was a Romanian-born architect, artist and furniture designer who settled in São Paulo, Brazil in 1956. An important figure in Brazilian modern design, Gillon established his furniture business in 1961 and developed a distinctive body of work combining modernist principles with traditional craftsmanship and fine hardwoods. His furniture gained international recognition during the 1960s and 1970s and remains highly collectible today.
