Mid Century George Nelson Pedestal Side Table for Herman Miller Black Laminate

This iconic Pedestal Design Table was designed by George Nelson for Herman Miller in 1954. This example is from 2003 and features a round black laminate top with an exposed maple plywood edge supported by a sculptural dark gray enameled metal pedestal base. Table feet have adjustable levelers.

The design of the Pedestal Side Table was originally introduced as part of Nelson’s Pedestal Collection, which reflected his belief that furniture should simplify the modern interior through clean forms and practical function. The graceful single-column base eliminated visual clutter while providing exceptional stability, creating a design that has remained in continuous production for decades. The Pedestal Collection is widely recognized as a landmark of American mid century modern furniture.

George Nelson (1908–1986)
George Nelson was one of the most influential American designers of the 20th century. Trained as an architect, he joined Herman Miller in 1945 as Director of Design, where he helped define the company’s modern identity while championing designers including Charles and Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi, and Alexander Girard.
Nelson also created many of Herman Miller’s most iconic furnishings, including the Pedestal Collection, Marshmallow Sofa, Coconut Chair, Platform Bench, Bubble Lamps, and Ball Clock. His innovative yet functional designs remain enduring icons of American mid century modern design.

Excellent vintage condition with wear consistent with age and normal use. Minor marks to black laminate surface typical of normal use.
