Early Production George Nelson OMNI Three-Bay Modular Walnut Wall Unit by Structural Products, Circa 1961

This exceptional early-production vintage mid-century modern three-bay OMNI modular wall unit shelving system was manufactured by Structural Products, Inc. circa 1961. Designed by George Nelson, the OMNI system represents one of the earliest modular architectural storage systems of its kind and laid the foundation for Nelson’s later Comprehensive Storage System (CSS) produced by Herman Miller.

Introduced in 1958, the OMNI system pioneered the concept of fully modular floor-to-ceiling storage using tension-mounted aluminum uprights and interchangeable suspended cabinetry, anticipating many of the ideas that would become defining elements of modern architectural storage systems. This ingenious system utilizes four spring-loaded aluminum tension poles that secure between the floor and ceiling, providing exceptional structural support without the need for permanent wall attachment.

This modular three-bay configuration offers an excellent balance of display and enclosed storage, consisting of four cabinet modules, ten shelves, and four original black enameled aluminum tension poles. Cabinet modules include a drop-front cabinet, a sliding-door cabinet, a three-drawer file cabinet, and a tambour-door cabinet. All walnut cabinets and shelves are completely interchangeable and may be repositioned anywhere along the uprights, allowing countless configurations to suit changing storage and display needs. Shelves may be mounted on either side of the support brackets, and the system can be installed against a wall or used as a freestanding room divider with access from both sides. The tension poles are designed for standard 8-foot (96-inch) ceilings and incorporate internal springs that accommodate approximately 6–7 inches of ceiling height variation. Two sets of original support spacers in different thicknesses are included for additional adjustment.

This early-production OMNI system represents an outstanding example of one of the most innovative American modular furniture designs of the early 1960s. Equally suited for residential or commercial interiors, it functions as both highly adaptable architectural storage and a striking sculptural focal point. Original manufacturer labels remain affixed to the uprights, bearing the OMNI logo, Structural Products, Inc., Charlotte, Michigan, and U.S. patent numbers issued between 1958 and 1960, indicating the system’s early production date.

CONDITION
Excellent condition with general wear consistent with age and use. A very light surface scratch to drop-down cabinet door with very mild patching to finish. Ships disassembled.
