The MR chair was designed by modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1927 as part of his contribution to the Weissenhof exhibit in Stuttgart, Germany and was awarded the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1977 and the Design Center Stuttgart Award in 1978. These iconic Bauhaus cantilever chairs feature clean lines, a simple profile and a lack of ornamentation that epitomizes the International Style. The chair’s cantilevered design used chrome-plated tubular steel – an innovative technology at the time – paired with handwoven natural cane for the perfect balance of contrasting materials and an intuitively accessible and ergonomic seat. This pair came from a set of six chairs. Most of the chairs had Stendig tags. These two chairs have only oval marks where then tags had been affixed.
